Patient Engagement starts with Patient Experience

ARRA, HITECH, ACA and HRRP combine to re-focus on Patient Experience.

Adoption and integration of the EMR by healthcare systems mandated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) have taken a number of years to design, build and validate.  Only recently have providers begun to adapt and utilize information to create more usable and valuable patient health records.

Prior to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP), hospitals had no economic incentive to care about patient experience, quality of care provided or reducing the per capita cost of healthcare.

The time and effort required for healthcare markets to understand, analyze and react to ACA requirements are immense and ongoing. Transition from volume to value-based care is in very early stages.

Cloud-based service providers (CSPs) offer scalability, cost efficiency, flexibility—and importantly—the means for healthcare providers and business associates to ensure HIPAA/HITECH compliance. Use of mobile smart phones in the U.S. is near 80%, up from 35% in 2011 (Pew Research Center).
